Harvey’s Research on Commodity Futures Influences Senate Report

October 15, 2009

A recent U.S. Senate investigation into speculation in the wheat futures market draws heavily on Professor Cam Harvey's work on commodity futures.

In a 2006 paper written with Claude Erb, Harvey was one of the first scholars to question the value of investments in commodity indexes.   Harvey and Erb’s work argued that commodity futures were over-hyped and demonstrated that the returns realized from trading commodities futures were not as strong as other scholars and investors once believed. The paper won the prestigious Graham and Dodd award in 2007.

More information is available in the full Senate investigation report, and in Harvey and Erb’s original research paper.
