Certificate of Academic Excellence in Finance

The Certificate of Academic Excellence in Finance distinguishes Duke MBA–Daytime students who focus in the discipline and attain excellent grades in finance courses.

To earn the certificate, you must take at least twelve finance-related electives beyond core finance courses--and six credits beyond those required to receive the MBA. This corresponds to a dual finance concentration in corporate finance and investments plus an extra finance and non-finance elective.

    Two of these courses:

    • ACCOUNTG 342 - Corporate Financial Reporting
    • ACCOUNTG 441 - Financial Statement Analysis
    • ACCOUNTG 442 - Valuation and Fundamental Analysis

    Two of these courses:

    • MGRECON 301 - Global Economic Environment of the Firm
    • DECISION 312 - Decision Models
    • DECISION 410 - Decision Analysis
    • DECISION 411 - Forecasting

    Three of these corporate finance courses:

    • FINANCE 356 - Entrepreneurial Finance
    • FINANCE 451 - Advanced Corporate Finance
    • FINANCE 452 - International Corporate Finance
    • FINANCE 455 - Corporate Restructuring
    • FINANCE 456 - Emerging Markets Corporate Finance
    • FINANCE 457 - Venture Capital and Private Equity
    • FINANCE 458 - Raising Capital: Financial Instruments, Institutions and Strategy
    • FINANCE 491 - Advanced Topics in Finance

    And three of these investments courses:

    Note that FINANCE 458 and FINANCE 491 (Advanced Topics in Finance) may count toward either the corporate finance or investments category but not toward both.

    You must achieve a grade-point average of 3.75 or better in these twelve courses to earn the certificate.

    If you complete more than the minimum set of courses (adding, say, an extra corporate finance course), we will compute your GPA over the highest qualifying grades.

    To signal to potential employers that you are on track to earn the certificate, you may note on your resume, “Qualifying for a Certificate of Academic Excellence in Finance”-- but only after completing at least three finance electives and one non-finance elective and only while maintaining a qualifying GPA across your certificate courses.
