All students must submit The Duke MBA--Daytime Financial Aid Form to apply for federal or alternative loan assistance.

Step 1: Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

All U.S. citizens and permanent residents applying for financial assistance must complete the 2009-2010 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before applying for federal or alternative loans.  The FAFSA application should be completed as soon as your 2008 Federal Tax information is available or no later than March 9, 2009 for incoming students and April 20, 2009 for continuing students, to ensure that your FAFSA data is received in a timely manner for processing.  It will take approximately two weeks for the FAFSA application to process and to receive the results of the FAFSA, Student Aid Report (SAR).

We recommend that you use one of the following methods to complete the FAFSA:

  • Complete the 2009-2010 FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.  Before completing the FAFSA web application, you should apply for a Personal Identification Number (PIN) by visiting the U.S. Department of Education's PIN site, www.pin.ed.gov.  This PIN will allow you to save time by enabling you to electronically sign your FAFSA.  Otherwise, you will have to print the signature page and mail it to the federal processing center.
  • Complete the 2009-2010 FAFSA paper application, which you may request by calling 1-800-433-3243.

Use the following information to complete Step 6 of the FAFSA application:

  • Fuqua Title IV Code: E00160
  • College Name: Duke University, Fuqua School of Business
  • Address: Not required when using Title IV code

Step 2: Complete The Duke MBA-Daytime Financial Aid Form

After completing the FAFSA, complete and submit The Duke MBA-Daytime Financial Aid Form:

This form will inform our Financial Aid Office of the types of aid that you are requesting.  Without this form we will not know that you are requesting financial aid.

Step 3: Receiving and Reviewing the Student Aid Report (SAR) Information

Once The Fuqua School of Business Financial Aid Office retrieves the SAR information from the federal processor, it will take approximately two weeks to review your application for Federal Student Aid. The Fuqua School of Business Financial Aid Office will review your SAR and notify you if any additional information is required.

If the results of your FAFSA SAR indicate that you were selected for federal verification or if you have estimated your income on the FAFSA, then you must submit a signed copy of your 2008 Federal Tax Forms (including schedules) and 2008 W-2 form(s) to the Financial Aid Office by April 20, 2009 for incoming students and as soon as possible for continuing students. Students who are selected for federal verification must also submit the Verification Worksheet. Our financial aid office will notify you if we need your tax forms for other financial aid matters.

Step 4: Receiving Financial Aid Award Notification

Students will receive a financial aid award notification once their need is determined. This award notification will include eligibility information for federal and nonfederal programs. It will also contain detailed instructions to follow regarding the student loan application process.

Financial aid award notifications will be sent to all awarded admitted students beginning in March 2009 for incoming students and beginning in May 2009 for continuing students.  Financial aid awards will be made on an ongoing basis as FAFSA results are received by The Fuqua School of Business Financial Aid Office.

After students receive the award notification, they should contact lenders to apply for the loan.

Step 5: Reviewing Award Notification and Applying for Student Loans

After receiving the financial aid award notification, students should follow the instructions on how to apply for the loans that are awarded to them.

Again, all U.S. citizens and permanent residents with loan eligibility will be expected to apply for the Federal Stafford Loan before applying for a Graduate PLUS or alternative student loan.  Federal Stafford Loan Master Promissory Notes, Graduate PLUS Loan Master Promissory Notes and alternative student loan applications should be completed online.  Please note that Federal Student Loan borrowers must complete the Federal Stafford and Federal Graduate PLUS online student loan entrance counseling sessions at www.mappingyourfuture.org before we can certify your loan request for these loan programs.

If awarded a Federal Perkins Loan, the Duke University Student Loan Office will mail the required Federal Perkins Loan Promissory Note to your home address. The completed promissory note should be returned to the Duke University Student Loan Office within two weeks of being received.  The Federal Perkins Loan is offered to a limited number of students in the Daytime program based on high need and available funds.

Your lender of choice will notify you once The Fuqua School of Business Financial Aid Office has certified your Federal Stafford Loan. Instructions on how to determine your Graduate PLUS or alternative student loan eligibility will be included in your award notification. The process will be fully explained in the information provided with your financial aid award notification.

Graduate PLUS and alternative student loan programs can be used to replace expected contributions and allow a student, if necessary, to borrow up to the cost of attendance for the academic year.

After receiving a Disclosure Statement from your lender for your student loans, you should to contact your lender directly for any loan account questions.  Fuqua will provide lender contact information in your Financial Aid Award Notification.

International Student Loan Borrowers

Since international students are ineligible for Federal Student Loans, they would not complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

However, international student loan borrowers must submit the 2009-2010 Fuqua School of Business Financial Aid Form.  This application will inform our Financial Aid Office of the types of aid requested.  (Please see right side bar for downloadable documents)

Students should contact their lender of choice to initiate the application process for a credit-based alternative student loan (which requires a U.S. citizen or permanent resident cosigner).

Outside Assistance

All students must immediately notify The Fuqua Financial Aid Office of all assistance received from other sources (for example, company sponsorship). You must provide copies of any written notice received as soon as you have them or provide a written statement which describes the assistance that will be received. A revision or adjustment of your financial aid package may be necessary to prevent you from being over awarded under federal guidelines. Failure to provide this information could result in the cancellation and/or repayment of all or a portion of assistance already received.

Reapplying for Financial Aid

Except for merit scholarship awards, financial aid is not automatically continued for the second year. You must complete a new or renewal FAFSA application to reestablish loan eligibility and reapply for student loans. The type and amount of loans may change according to your needs and available resources. Information regarding this process will generally be provided in the spring semester.

Exchange/ GATE Study Courses

Second Year Fuqua students who are selected for one of the semester exchange programs are eligible to receive financial aid during the exchange semester as they would be if enrolled at Fuqua. Additional expenses allowed will depend on the location. A separate form will be required to collect the needed information.

Fuqua allows students to apply for additional alternative educational loan funds to assist in meeting the costs of GATE study courses. A separate form must be completed by those selected to participate in a GATE course.

Deferment of Previous Loans

Full-time students qualify for monthly student loan payment deferments. If you currently have student loans outstanding, you should request deferment forms from each lender. Bring these forms with you when you come to campus before the start of the first term. The Duke University Registrar's Office (not Fuqua's Registrar) must certify your enrollment as part of the process for requesting an educational loan deferment. The Registrar will NOT certify your enrollment until classes start. Until you receive notification that your loans have been deferred, you must continue making payments or risk being declared in default.

Assistantships

The Fuqua School of Business does not offer monthly paid assistantships or fellowships to any students. Teaching and research assistant positions are available and are hourly jobs paid biweekly. Information about work opportunities will be available after you arrive on campus in the fall.
